Welcome to the one and only culture tour of Iriomote Island, Okinawa.

Let’s walk through the oldest villages on Iriomote Island, Sonai, and Hoshidate, which have an exceptional and old culture with many festivals and rituals throughout the year.
We will visit traditional Okinawan houses and shrines. You will hear many stories about the local people’s way of living, history, customs, and religion of Iriomote Island and the former Ryukyu kingdom. Ryukyuans developed a complex culture with a distinctive language and religion where women have been spiritual leaders.

Iriomote is not only beautiful nature. Secret tradition is still alive.

I tremendously enjoyed Karola’s Cultural Walk on beautiful Iriomote. I found her style engaging: she mixed historical explanations (about for example shamanism) with personal stories based on her process of documenting the island (through artistic photography, interviews with locals, etc.).

Besides the walking and talking, there was enough time to calmly take in the various architectural and spiritual sightings (as well as the nature from which it was born).

I gained a stronger interest in all the communal activities/crafts and mysticism of the island. Thank you Karola.

I had a great time on the Iriomote Cultural Walk tour, Karolina was a great guide and I learned so much about the culture and history of the island! It was really interesting to hear her explanations and stories and to visit a lot of different places in the villages – thank you for a great tour!

One of the best tours I have ever done, what a pleasure to learn about Iriomote local indigenous culture. I work as a writer and photographer in the field of architecture and design. I had the best time. Karo was SO knowledgable, fun, easy to talk to and we had such a great day together. I highly recommend this to anyone who even has the slightest interest in getting to know the unique and rich local indigenous culture of Iriomote Island.
